Choosing the correct trailer to carry Planings at 44 tonnes on UK roads is tricky. The UK uses a mixture of asphalt walking floor trailers, asphalt pushout trailers, asphalt insulated tipping trailers and then rigid tippers. There are multiple reasons why one type of trailer is preferred to another and particulary 'who' you ask in the supply chain for an opinion. Road Planings which are also called 'scalpings', are an aggregate produced by a cold milling machine. Approximately 25,000,000 tonnes of Asphalt is produced annually in the UK from over 300 sites. Potentially this much of this is laid at sites where planings are generated. 6,200,000 tonnes of planings are produced per annnum with much of it laid as parking base etc. The bitumen based asphalt or tar based tarmac scalpings are 98 % recyclable' or more accurately down-cyclable. Gone are the days when planings were given away free as nowadays they can be reused into new surface products.
Newton Trailers current first choice trailer for the transport of Tarmac Planings is:
Recommended First Choice Trailer: Fliegl Insulated Planings Push Out Trailer
Recommended Second Choice Trailer: STAS Steel Body Aggregate Tipping Trailer
Recommended Sales Options: Hydraulic Rear Door; Automatic Sheet System; Weigher System
Seasonal: Not so much or weather dependent. But often associated with warmer dry weather when laying asphalt or tarmac is happening.

6.2 million tonnes of Planings Site Won (2012) and transported in the UK per annum. 3.2 million of this was recycled by the industry.
A good source of information on Planings and the industry we like is: Agg-Net
A trend apparent in Planings Transport in Europe is that growing numbers of transport companies are switching from tipping trailers to highly insulated pushout trailers. Eurovia and others use the Fliegl Planings pushout trailer extensively already in Europe. In the UK the tradition is to use 8 wheel rigids despite this having no logic. In Europe a rigid would be a non logical purchase due to massive payload and efficiency losses - in the UK these vast losses are buried in the confused politics of the 8 meter Bridge Formula and the broken links between engineering and transport companies - I am surprised they still dont use horse cart and a wooden wheel barrow - it would make as much sense. In the 2014 era Planings Trailers that use HORIZONTAL discharge became available - Walking Floor Trailers. Many had dubious insulation and ridiculous running costs and largely have dropped out of favour - they sort of work but with vast capital input; huge depreciation; poor insulation; eyewatering running costs. Then Planings Belt loaders appeared on the scene in 2018. These cure some of the problems of the floor but then have limited scope for use on a wider range of aggregates essential for the Holy Grail of 'backload' and what the owner must do when Planings is not running.
Now an existing product from Europe but new to the UK is available and is taking the market by storm. The Fliegl Planings Pushout or Ejector Trailer. It has all of the benefits of huge insulation to please the Engineer; massively improved payload over an 8 wheeler; horizontal discharge to satisfy health and safety; simplicity of design to decimate running costs and unlimited product restriction - so versatility of product from Planings to Muck away - de risking the purchase decision.
Planings or Road Scalpings are the cold milled product from asphalt and tarmac road surfaces. Arguably they could go in almost any bulk trailer or rigid. The material can be more aggressive or abraisive and therefore it may be that a steel body trailer or rigid is more suitable than an alloy trailer or alloy box. However during larger road construction projects there will be a lot of Fliegl Asphalt Push Out trailers discharging hot product using horizontal discharge. This product has a 5 mm Hardox floor and 4 mm Hardox steel side wall. Therefore it is an ideal trailer to run out with Asphalt to the construction point and return back with planings to be reprocessed into new Tarmac. A good round robin load. Many companies running planings may have a fleet of steel rigid trucks - so it may be interesting for them to have a Fliegl push off trailer in the fleet. It can be used on hot, cold and muck away - with a 27 tonne payload it sort of stuffs the 8 wheeler. My prediciton as Mystic Meg is that horizontal discharge will dominate over tipping in the UK over the next 10 years. Of course you can always purchase a Fliegl body for a rigid but this does miss out on payload but does win on horizontal discharge.
Newton have worked hard with VWS to create an ecosystem of weighing equipment that is unique in the UK tipping market. We have a conventional weighing system that also informs 120 times per second whether the trailer or the rigid tipper is tipping the planings correctly or is in danger of tip over. It reports a tip over warning via Klaxon on the trailer; warning director to drivers handheld and warning back on cloud and email to the transport manager. The trailer records weight of every load, location of every load and unload event; what material was in the load and even records and keeps a picture of every load. If you are on hot product as well as planings in say a Fliegl trailer then you also get temperature recording. No other ecosystem like it exists other than from Newton Trailers.

Planings Trailer Option: VWS Newton Weigher with Live Temperature Reporting
Planings Trailer Option: Powered rear under run bar. Lifts up out of the way of the Planings Road Laying Paver.
Planings Trailer Option: Powered rear door on an insulated tipping trailer. Powered doors are simpler and get out of the way of the operation without getting a driver or banksman's hands dirty.
Planings Trailer Option: Quicksilver 12 mm liner on an aluminium tipping trailer. Prevents sticking of the product and tip overs. The 12mm Quicksilver is good for planings as the material can damage lighter aluminum floors and side walls. It does also provide some extra insulation for temperature purposes. Downside ££££ and KGS.
Newton Trailers are the largest supplier of Tipping Trailers, Ejectors and Moving Floors in the UK. Although for Planings transport we would say that the Fliegl Pushout has no comparable trailer or rigid product there are customers who prefer to use tipping trailers. We would recommend either the steel STAS U Rockstar aggregate trailer or the more interesting STAS U Rockstar insulated Planings Trailer.
